Sr Frances Orchard, whose mother helped to found the international development charity CAFOD, hopes to continue her mother’s good work this winter by supporting a new cookbook in aid of the charity’s work overseas.
The Live Simply Book of Recipes and Tips was written and produced by volunteers at Our Lady of Lourdes, Wheatley and Corpus Christi Parish in Oxford. Spearheaded by Fr Mervyn, it contains recipes sent in by parishioners, intended to help people live and cook more simply. The recipes – soups and breads, a wide range of vegetarian savoury meals, fish and meat dishes, along with a collection of sweets and desserts – are also accompanied by useful tips on storing and using leftovers.
The booklet has so far proven an enormous success, raising hundreds of pounds for CAFOD – a charity that Sr Frances’s mother was instrumental in establishing, having organised one of its very earliest fundraisers.
Sr Frances said: “My mother was Elspeth Orchard, one of the four ‘feisty’ women who founded CAFOD. As a child, I helped to open envelopes and tore off the stamps of all the donations that flooded into our family sitting room.”
Sr Frances has given each of the CJ communities a copy of the booklet for Christmas, and hopes that her support for the project will inspire others to get involved with CAFOD.
The booklet can be purchased for £5 (plus £1.60 P&P). For further details and to make an order, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
