On All Saints’ Day in 1615, Mary Ward had an important spiritual insight into her vocation, and the vocation of those who would become members of her Institute. We call this the ‘Just Soul’ vision: Mary sees a just soul free from earthly things, and free to ‘refer all to God’. The following day, she wrote about the experience to her spiritual director, Roger Lee SJ.

This recording was made by Judi Dench in 1985, as part of a presentation of the life of Mary Ward written by William Hewett SJ. This extract is largely direct quotation from Mary Ward’s letter to Roger Lee SJ.

The picture is a detail from painting 25 of the Painted Life of Mary Ward, which depicts Mary receiving this vision.
